Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament
(MCBS)
The Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) is a vibrant religious congregation of men in the Catholic Church. Committed to the service of God and our brethren, MCBS was founded on 7 May 1933 in Kerala, India. Since its inception, MCBS has been extending its mission territories to different parts of India and abroad, spreading the message of love, compassion, and faith.
In 2009, inspired by the General Synaxis, MCBS embarked on a new chapter by exploring the possibility of extending our missionary activities to the African continent. Under the guidance of Fr. George Vallikattukuzhiyil, the then General Councilor for missionary apostolate, MCBS’s Zion Province was assigned the noble task of starting a mission in the Archdiocese of Tabora, Tanzania.
Our pioneer missionaries arrived in Tanzania on 18th December 2009, filled with enthusiasm and the desire to serve the people. They dedicated their initial period to learning the local language and familiarizing themselves with the rich culture of the region. This process of assimilation was crucial in establishing a strong bond with the community they were called to serve.
On 13 June 2010, MCBS priests were entrusted with the pastoral responsibility of Makokola parish in the town of Tabora. This marked the beginning of our impactful presence in Tanzania. With time, MCBS’s mission in Tanzania expanded, and on 1st October 2012, we extended our services to Ndono, a village parish with 35 substations.
As our mission flourished, we recognized the need for a physical space to carry out our various endeavors. With a vision to go beyond the realms of pastoral care, MCBS purchased 50 acres of land in Ilolamgulu village near Tabora. We named this project EMPOWER, which stands for “Eucharistic Missionaries for the Person Oriented World Emancipation and Revitalization.” The very essence of this project is to empower the people through education, healthcare, and social outreach.
As a pioneer initiative, we established a girls’ home, which was inaugurated on 3rd July 2015 by the Very Rev. Fr Superior General, in the presence of the Archbishop of Tabora and the Provincial Superior of Zion Province. This heartfelt occasion marked a significant milestone in our mission, symbolizing our dedication to nurturing and empowering young women.
MCBS in Tanzania has grown significantly over the years, with 22 dedicated priests and 26 compassionate nuns serving in various capacities. We have established 8 prominent parishes and 82 outstations, ensuring that our mission reaches as many people as possible. Today, approximately 65,000 individuals benefit from our mission work in Tanzania, experiencing the transformative power of God’s love through our pastoral, educational, healthcare, and social work activities.
MCBS remains committed to its mission in Tanzania and around the world, driven by an unwavering faith and a relentless desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. We continue to strive towards building a better, more inclusive, and compassionate world, guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church and the values instilled in us by our founders Rev. Frs. Mathew Alakkalam and Joseph Paredom.
In Nala, a developing purlieu of Dodoma the MCBS PRIESTS made a significant investment by purchasing a few acres of land. This acquisition was done with the aim of initiating and implementing several projects that would greatly benefit the local community. These projects encompassed a wide range of areas, from education and healthcare to social welfare and sustainable development.
Currently eleven dedicated priests from the Zion province are always available to serve the people of Tanzania. These priests have been stationed strategically in four different centers, working tirelessly to address the various needs of the local population. Through the priest’s selfless commitment and unwavering dedication, they have been able to create a positive difference in the lives of many Tanzanians.
The collaborative efforts between the various nun congregations and the MCBS missionaries have been instrumental in fostering unity, understanding, and cooperation between different religious communities. This partnership serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of compassion, service, and mutual support in building a harmonious society.
It is truly remarkable to witness the impact that the FCC and SSH sisters of the nun congregation and the MCBS missionaries have had in Tanzania. Their combined efforts are not only transforming individual lives but also contributing to the overall development and well-being of the local communities. May their collaboration continue to flourish, bringing hope and prosperity to all those they serve.
