MCBS ZION MISSION
“In 2009, the General Synaxis embarked on exploring the prospect of extending our missionary endeavors to Africa. Fr. George Vallikattukuzhiyil MCBS, the then General Councilor for missionary apostolate, spearheaded the initiative to identify suitable locations for our mission. The task fell upon MCBS Zion Province to commence their mission in the Archdiocese of Tabora, Tanzania. Our pioneering missionaries arrived in Tanzania on December 18, 2009, taking time to grasp the language and immerse themselves in the local culture.
On June 13, 2010, our priests were entrusted with the care of Makakola parish in Tabora town. Expanding our mission further, on October 1, 2012, we extended our mission to Ndono, a village parish with 35 substations. Simultaneously, we acquired 50 acres of land in Ilolangulu village near Tabora, envisioning a broadened mission beyond pastoral care. This endeavor was named EMPOWER, signifying ‘Eucharistic Missionaries for the Person Oriented World Emancipation and Revitalization.’
True to its name, EMPOWER aims to fortify communities through education, healthcare, and social empowerment. As a pioneering effort, we inaugurated a girls’ home on July 3, 2015, in the presence of Very Rev. Fr Superior General, the Archbishop of Tabora, and the Provincial Superior of Zion Province. Subsequently, ZION ACADEMY, an English medium school, was established to provide quality education for village children, in collaboration with the SSH sisters. ZION ACADEMY became a vital gateway to integrate into the social fabric of Ilolangulu village.
Today, numerous educational and social work projects are in progress, dedicated to uplifting the impoverished and abandoned. On August 2, 2015, we expanded our presence to the Dodoma Archdiocese, the capital city of Tanzania, responding to the invitation of the archbishop. In Dodoma, we acquired land with plans for projects benefiting the local population and also to support our village exposure programms in Tabora. On November 18, 2017, we further extended our pastoral service to the Dar es Salaam diocese by assuming responsibility for the Kwembe Parish. Presently, 12 priests from the Zion province serve the people of Tanzania across four centers.”
