MISSIONARY CONGREGATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
The Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) is a religious congregation of men religious in the Catholic Church committed to the service of God and their brethren. The congregation was founded on 7 May 1933 in Kerala, India, with a strong mission to spread the message of love, compassion, and faith throughout the world.
MCBS AT A GLANCE
The Eucharistic-centered re-awakening in the life of the Church, initiated by the Holy Pope Pius X (1902-1914) and the renewed missionary awareness and enthusiasm in the Syro-Malabar Church in the initial decades of the 20th century were the historical backdrop in which the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament was born. God has been preparing Fathers Mathew Alakalam and Joseph Paredam of the diocese of Changanaserry to imbibe this new missionary and religious charism and consecrate themselves towards the building up of the Church. They, in fulfillment of their lifelong religious and missionary aspirations, outlined a new way of religious life in the Syro-Malabar Church by founding the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS). As the providence of God unfolded, the congregation was officially blessed and canonically erected by Mar James Kalassery, the then Bishop of Changanaserry, in the mission church at Mallappally on 7th May 1933.
In the year 2023, as the congregation celebrates it’s 90th anniversary since establishment, around 500 priests in three provinces serve the Lord in various parts of the world.
The three provinces are; 1) EMMAUS PROVINCE KOTTAYAM
3) PARAM PRASAD PROVINCE ERNAKULAM
OUR CHARISM
The founding fathers of the Congregation have entrusted to its members, as their spiritual heritage, a religious life marked by love and single-minded devotion to the Eucharistic Lord and missionary vitality. Its Charism is to live and proclaim the Eucharistic Mystery that is celebrated, to gather the children of God around the altar to ‘praise God in the midst of His Church, to take part in her sacrifice and to eat the Lord’s supper’ (SC 10), and to uphold the real presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. The members of the congregation strive to attain this goal through their dedicated life and various Apostolates.
MCBS MISSIONARIES IN TANZANIA
Since its establishment, MCBS has extended its mission territories to different parts of India and abroad. One of the significant missions undertaken by MCBS is in Tanzania, Africa. In 2009, MCBS began their mission work in Tanzania, and it has flourished ever since. Currently, there are 22 devoted priests and 26 dedicated nuns working selflessly in this mission.
The MCBS missionaries in Tanzania are engaged in a variety of vital activities. Pastoral care plays a significant role in their ministry, as they strive to reach out to the local communities, guiding and nurturing their spiritual growth. They conduct regular masses, sacraments, and provide spiritual direction to the faithful, fostering a sense of unity and belonging.
Education is another key aspect of their mission in Tanzania. Recognizing the importance of education in empowering individuals and communities, the MCBS missionaries have established a few schools and educational institutions. These institutions not only provide quality education but also emphasize moral values and character development, shaping the minds of the younger generation.
The missionaries also actively participate in health care initiatives, recognizing the need for medical assistance in underserved communities. They collaborate with local authorities and organizations to provide access to healthcare services, organize medical camps, and create awareness about various health issues. Through their efforts, they have been able to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of numerous individuals.
Furthermore, the MCBS missionaries are deeply involved in social work activities. They work tirelessly to uplift marginalized and disadvantaged communities, offering support, care, and resources. They strive to alleviate poverty, empower women, and promote social justice through various initiatives. Their commitment to engendering positive social change has made a significant difference in the lives of thousands of people.
In Tanzania, the MCBS missionaries have established eight large parishes and 82 outstations, ensuring that the message of Christ reaches every corner of the country. Their tireless efforts have touched the lives of approximately 65,000 people, who benefit from the diverse range of services provided by the MCBS missionaries in Tanzania.
